Perhaps they relied on a sort of "Jerry would have wanted us to do this" sentiment. And I don't know how Punk and Cena delivered promos as great as they did in the final segment. Booker, Cena, Cody and others fought back tears a little bit to get through their stories, simply to just get through them in order to bring the show to an end. When all they wanted to do themselves was be backstage and find out what was going on with Lawler. I can't even imagine what it was like for guys like Cody, Rey, Miz, Sheamus and a few others to go out there and try to give it their all in front of a crowd that was checking Twitter for reports of King's condition. And now Lawler's heart attack has eclipsed any other wrestling "news" worth writing about. Given that it's 9/11, this was going to be a somber Wrap Up anyhow. Something that was not happening back at Over the Edge. Even the people who were there live were online and checking for updates. Because I don't think anyone watching at home, or in that arena, cared about the last hour of the show. #Did eddie guerrero have a heart attack in the ring tvIf anything progressive comes out of this, perhaps there'll be discussions regarding balancing tragic events with the live entertainment that people tuned in to see on TV and the people in the arena paid to see live. And what made last night also feel so "up in the air" and scary was that Lawler's condition was an ongoing issue, and the people in the WWE didn't know, moment to moment, if he would be okay. But it was obvious, from what happened last night on RAW, that no new protocol is in place for live mishaps and emergencies. And I don't think there's another entertainment entity that would still subscribe to this unspoken, out-dated carnival doctrine. The WWE still gets retro-criticism for their "the show must go on" mentality as it relates to Owen's PPV death. The new-era beast that can either nuzzle you or bite you. And turning their nose up at wrestling and calling it fake while somehow not acknowledging that video games and movies they love are also "fake." The WWE has faced down live tragedy before - and many people on Twitter pointed out that it must have been hard on Bret Hart to be there last night given Owen's live death at the 1999 Over the Edge pay-per-view - but this was their first on-air ordeal in the age of social media. At this point, the next day, if they're still doubting, they're just trolling. But I think I can only give the doubters so much slack here. Or even the time when JBL gave Eddie Guerrero's mom a heart attack at a house show. They're just assuming that this is somehow similar to the time when the WWE posted, on their own website, that Jeff Hardy had collapsed in a Boston hotel stairwell. And I know there are some people out there whose initial reaction was to doubt the validity of this, but those people obviously didn't watch the broadcast. CUZ JERRY'S GONNA JERE! #woodersonquote #puppies For those who don't know, and didn't see RAW last night, Jerry Lawler suffered a heart attack while at the announce table, calling a tag match between Kane and Daniel Bryan and the Prime Time Players. And while a lot of us are still reeling from the tragic events of last night's RAW from Montreal, I'd like to mention that McBride is, naturally, about four decades younger than Lawler. That message comes from Jerry Lawler's girlfriend's, Lauryn Laine McBride, Facebook page.
